(MEDICAL) DOCTOR，在北美，是需要有 LICENSE 才能行医的吧？这个 MEDICAL DOCTOR 是指有 LICENSE 在当地政府挂名可以行医的“医生”，我的理解。当然 LICENSE 需要必需的学历和资历。这个学历就是 M.D. (can take care of people bing sick) 和 PH.D (advanced research)。

这个是安省的。我认为 Medical Council of Canada 发放 Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada (LMCC)，然后 College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario 来 certify 在安省范围内行医。肤浅理解，敬请纠正。

medical doctor就是医学基本学位. 但不是什么本科不本科的. 在加拿大医学本身就是postgraduate education. 是在本科(premed, or life science of biomedical science)的基础之上才能申请的.

MD is the ONLY degree for clinical medicine in Canada. That means there is NO higher/No lower degree in Clinical Medicine. It is "professional doctorate" by definition in North America (of course not in China!).MD is also called undergraduate medical education, and it is the ONLY education for Clinical Medicine (medical doctor / physician). MD can do both clinical and research work.
PhD is "research doctorate" and for research ONLY. However in term of admission standard and competitiveness and course load, PHD is much easier to get in North America.
For many people from China, because they can not get into MD program, PhD is an option and it is much easier in fact.
