i'd get the body only , then get a tamron 17-50/f2.8 lens. costs about the same as the kit, but you get constant aperture f2.8, downside is that the focal length is shorter than 18-105, and no VR (not really important for 17-50 range still image).

It is not for me, I buy it as a gift. :-) budget is up to $1200USD. But thanks much for your suggestion, I will save it for myself. :D

if you're into photo AND video, then 550D is probably a better choice, the body MSRP costs $100 more than D90. it's pretty much a 7D minus the 7D AF and 8fps, but with pretty much the same sensor and video functions.

it was only release a few days ago, i believe amazon takes preorder now. if you don't know what type of stuff he shoots most, then just buy a 18-55 IS lens, good bang for the buck, he can always upgrade later.
