You could use some annuals, e.g. petunias, begonias, etc., to decorate the yard and make it look like a garden. And they will bloom to the first frost, say the end of Sep.You could do gardening at anytime during the year round, physically or mentally. :)
Some ideas,
1. You must to inspect the quality of the soil if you want long term run.
2. Now, mid-late July, is the best time to have a good deal with some post bloomed flowers, e.g. peony.
3. Planning is an important part you could enjoy. It's very normal to change mind when implementing the plan. That's the part I love too.
Immagination, creativity, and dirty hands!

Plant some annuals now. They can still bloom till end of summer. And in fall you can plant trees and bulbs so next spring you'll have flowers. don't rush till you think it over what you want your garden look like.

Remember the key factor is how many hours your flower bed gets sun light. try planting when the weather forcast has a few days of rain, that will help a lot for the root to establish. The 1st week, you must water enough.
