Many Chinese universities have “technology “ in their name, but when translated into Chinese, it becomes “理工大学”. For example, 北京理工大学 is translated as Beijing Institute of Technology. We can’t help but wonder, since there is no mention of science or engineering in the name, why it is called 理工大学 instead of 技术学院？

first of all you need to understand that the english names are just the names,not translation. the universities have the right to name themselves. having said that, the english names that 北京理工大学(BIT) and 哈尔滨工业大学（HIT）gave themselves are the copies of MIT.

因为英文译名已经被占用啦，只能找靠近的，比如University of Science and Technology Beijing已经被钢院占了，京工就只能用Beijing Institute of Technology

不是这样的。在80年代的大学改名潮中大部分的学院都改名为大学，institute改成了university。京工把中文名改成了大学，英文名本可以改成beijing university of technology的，但因为由MIT这个NB的存在，它就保留institute以显示自己的NB。

Tokyo Institute of Technology is translated as 东京工业大学, while 北京工业大学 is Beijing University of Technology in English. Even Confucius got confused.

I like how they use “Polytechnic” when the university focus on STEM majors, and how it is translated as 理工. The TMU was formerly known as Ryerson Polytechnic University.

Polytechnic is usually used for lower level post-secondary schools, more like community colleges. Seneca College just changed the name to Seneca Polytechnic.
