枫下沙龙 / 梦想天空 / I'm sort of confident at the purposes that both De Tourvel and Cecile served through the whole process, yet what role did De Merteuil actually and ultimately play? Did I scare your socks off by asking you such an obviously silly question? Be honest.I can handle the truth and the truth only. ^_^

The story of De Merteuil is a revised version of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew",with the same flavor of thelong lasting tradition of misogyny. De Merteuil is determined to wage a war against her arch opponent, the capitalized "Man". Her sole intention is to overthrow the tyranny of masculinity in a male dominant society, with the identical, if not more ingenious, strategies and tactics that men have kept in their arsenal for centuries. Her miserable downfall is, therefore, not personal and incidental, but an eloquent rhetoric about the moral victory of the male superiority.

Les Liaisons Dangereuses is the French version of the Taming of the Shrew, while the Taming of the Shrew is the English version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses? The former's the manifestation of male chauvinisim, while the latter's that of female chauvinisim?
Is my understanding of your analysis correct?

not really. both work carry the male chauvinistic perspective typical of their age.

In that case, what is the REVISED segment in Les Liaisons Dangereuses, as you indicated that it is the revised version of The Taming of the Shrew?

Revision is just figurative speaking. There is no exact segment.

Do we have a winner here or not in Les Liaisons Dangereuses? Is there a possible comparative buddy for De Merteuil in Chinese literature?

De Merteuil is often associated with the Machiavellian villain, although a female copy. had someone wrote a true masterpiece about 武则天 the woman, we could have had some analogy to exploited on.

My perfect candidate would be Wang, Xi Feng in the Dream of the Red Chamber. I am wondering why she is not on your list? Why?I'm not a big fan of Wu Zetian, yet I sort of feel that you seem to understate, or under-estimate her personalities and achievements by crowning her the buddy for De Merteuil.

Wang is cunning enough to impose great pain and suffering upon other women, to speak precisely, the weaker and more frail ones. However, she is not evil enough to wage an all out war against male dominance.

To you, De Merteuil was powerful and political? To me, she was not only as fragile as Wang, Xi Feng, but also eventually turned herself into a victim of her own.She started the experiment by victimizing everyone and anyone other than herself, and at least it looked that way in the very beginning, yet coming to the end, she did not overthrow anything, did she?
Male dominance, as you indicated, was her subject and target, yet eventually, it was male dominance that overpowered her, not the other way around.
I am kind of confused at the possibility that you might have way overstated her, mightn't you?

Our determination to take on a disadvantageous fight is quite often more important, to a greater degree even much more inspirational, than the undesirable outcome of the fight itself.

I'm not a big fan of Wu Zetian, yet I respect her as a great politician and a fascinating female being , which is why I felt it might be an insult to her and me that you crown her the buddy for De Merteuil.Such a painful and hurtful understatement, indeed.

The analogy between the two is their non-existent intention of becoming an extension of male apparatus in their power struggle. They both seek the ultimate subordination of the male species.

thinking of the for ever and ever good story of Adam and Eve, it is probably safe to make such a statement thatwould claim all the good and evil we have witnessed in this world could eventually contribute their origin to what is "between" the man and the woman. in this sense, "the subordination of the male species in their BEDROOMS" is but a continuation of the same in "the Universe", or vice versa.

Are you talking about De Merteuil or Wu Zetian? Why did I have such a strong feeling that this statement is the perfect interpretation of Wu, Zetian, YET your De Merteuil ?To me, De Merteuil's eyes were on the bedroom of anyone else but herself, which seems telling a completely different story from the one you are presenting?

De Merteuil. Scholars from various ages have considered De Merteuil a Machiavellian figure for good reasons. Yet her frailty, as in Hamlet's "frailty, thy name is women", or weakness, or piteousness is certainly not one of them.

It is my point of view. Male chauvinism is part of main stream culture of that specific historical period. Hence it is reflected in the works by default.
