2016 Countdown, New York Time Square
For 111 years, Time Square has been the center of worldwide attention on every new year's eve, ever since the owners of One Times Square began in 1904 to conduct rooftop celebrations to greet the New Year. The celebration has been going on for more than a century, and the famous Times Square ball made its debut on December 31, 1907.
The New Year's celebration has been watched on TV around the world for decades. Each year, about 1 million revelers jam into Times Square for the ball drop;100 million US people watched it on TV; international viewership of this spectacular event stands at over 1 billion.
The celebration is the biggest party on the planet, featuring star-studded musical performances, balloons, handouts, confetti, a colorful pyrotechnic display and about a million of revelers from all around the globe. Statistical findings indicate that 20% of the countdown audiences are international and 70% are from outside Tri-State area.
What makes locals keep distance is that the crowd becomes unbearable. Since there is a limit on number of people Time Square can take, people tend to go there as early as possible to secure a spot in viewing area. in 2011, police officers shut down the nearby block to traffic in early afternoon hours; this year, it happens much earlier; likely due to warm weather, since more people feel comfortable with long hours outdoor waiting. Revelers started gathering even before dawn for a decent spot.
An expensive alternative is to stay in a hotel suite nearby. Room price of Time Square hotels with a direct view on ball drop raised sharply to up to $7,000 per night on new years eve. Restaurants & bars will reopen after count down, but run with no bargain.
