They are actually just rampant liars.
The guilty-looking expressions they pull – with wrinkled noses and sad, averted eyes – are actually just learned behaviour, experts have said.
It’s something they have picked up from humans over thousands of years – to ensure they don’t upset their meal ticket.
Dr Susan Hazel, a veterinary scientist at the university of Adelaide, said: ‘There have been a number of studies, and it’s pretty clear that dogs don’t feel or display guilt. It’s not the way their brains work.’
