Mayor John Tory and the TTC have announced that Wind Mobile customers that ride the subway will be able to use their phones underground starting today.
The service will be available in all stations that are currently equipped with Wi-Fi. In total 17 downtown Toronto subways have Wi-Fi enabled but the TTC has said it plans to outfit all subway stations with internet access in the next two years.
TTC Chair Josh Colle told reporters Wednesday morning that the next phase of the plan will including building infrastructure that would allow cellphones to be used on the train in the tunnels between stations.
Tory said the infrastructure currently in place allows other wireless carriers to sign on and provide underground service as well, however at this point, Wind is the only carrier that is providing the service at this point.
