I once have a Cyrion(? sorry, I cannot remember the name, it's acquired by intel) and cannot install Solaris.

Then I went to a computer part store to buy another computer, where I met a guy who was really good at hardwares. He told me so and selected all the parts for me. The new computer met no problem with Solaris. After several years, when I bought still another computer myself, I chose a wrong motherboard, which did not support Pentium III CPU. I changed it for a much more expensive one and the computer got perfect.

My opinion is: if you plan to install Solaris, you'd better choose the most expensive parts. And make sure you can change them if they doesn't work.

      • Ha,ha good question.
      • SUN的操作系统, 分基于SPARC芯片和INTEL芯片2种.......相当于Windows
    • Solaris x86 hardware support is very poor, make sure u do get compatible hardware before ur installation, especially video card and network card.
      • thanks! I have a mainboard which is not in SUN's hardware compatibility list. I can use this mainboard to install Solaris? Thanks very much!
        • i think motherboard shouldn't be a big problem, unless u want to use those advanced featre in ur motherboard, like PM, etc. btw, why do u want to use solaris x86, not linux?
          • I think Solaris has better performance than Linux. really thanks! BTW, if i have no canadian experience, i can't find a job here? do u have some idea on this? thanks again.
            • wrong.
you are absolutely wrong! solaris's performance is actually worse than Linux, however, its scalability and stability is much better than linux. solaris x86 and solaris sparc is also different. regarding ur working experience, i think there are so many ppl found a job without canadian experience. ur language will be ur biggest bottleneck at the beginning.
              • really thanks very much! Since early this year, i came into canada. I stayed in englsih school months and i think i have polished much better my english. But i still can't find job. what should i do?
                • patience, technical background, interview skill sets, and luck will be all added. it also depends on which field you r in, if you are a java developer, get some experience in EJB, J2EE. it looks everybody wants it now.
                  • Thanks for answer. for system admin, it's difficult to find a position without canadian experience? which is your field? if u don't mind it.
                    • SA? Your communication skill sets will be very important, plus, if you do have some certificates, it will be very helpful. My field, web development now, but i had some of this, some of that...keep changing job in US..:P
                      • thanks for kind answer. i have all u mentioned above except i 'm not sure whether I have good communication skills or not. But i think i have improved my communication skills much better since i came here. But.... really don't know why.
                        • Patience and luck...good luck then..:)
                          • yes. Patience. But i really didn't foresee such situation before i left china. These days, i just practised my english. but... how long do u mean it will be?
                            • 3-6 months, i think. the overall market is also very important, even in US, it takes longer and longer to find a good job now.
                              • thanks. u work in canada or us now?
                                • I just moved to Toronto from Boston 1 month ago, looking for a job as well. I really feel the market difference between Boston and Toronto. //sigh
                                  • since u have north american experience, it's easy for u to find a good job here. u r the one who like playing muds?
                                    • not really easy as well, depends on what ur expectation is. i am the one who used to like playing MUD in SMTH and BUPT..:)
                                      • your name and your hobby are so special. so many ppl remember u.
                                        • faint...who r u then?..:)
                                          • it's not important to know who i'm. i 'm the one who can't find a job here. do u have some advice on interview? if u don't mind it.
                                            • treat me a dinner bah, i could tell u a lot...:PPP anyway, i am still looking for one now, i will write a review after i got one..hehe
                                              • interesting! I can tell u, i almost had the same study and life trail in BJ as u. Anyway, thanks u very much for your kind help and advice. good luck to u too!
    • From my experience, Solaris can only be installed on Pentium matchine, not AMD or Cyrion(?). The motherboard is not important, as long as it supports a Pentium CPU.
      • really? solaris doesn't support AMD cpu? how can i conform it? plz
        • The installation disk is labelled "Solaris for Intel". Although it's a DanBan disk, it may tell something.
          • do u know AMD cpu supports Solaris8? I just have an AMD cpu. plz
            • I am not sure. I just happen to have a Dao Ban disk of Solaris for Intel.
              • don't worry about it. Solaris8 is free software. So there is no Dao Ban on solaris8. may i ask u some questions about solaris8? thanks first!

          • You got an error message stating Solaris cannot install on your PC cuz it's using non-Intel CPU?!!!
      • Really thanks very much!
      • come on!!!!! Solaris definitly run on AMD and Cyrix...take it easy.....As you know, AMD and Cyrix are Intel compabilitive CPUs...how come Solaris cannot run on them? I am using Solaris on AMD now!
        • u r great! thank u very much. I think u r a solaris expert, u have certificate from Sun? plz
          • faint~~~~I am sorry at your expectation...I am only a man-out-of-door to Solaris....hoho....
            • try our best. I 'm sure we can become experts in this field. what do u do? if u don't mind it.
              • Unix Admin...
                • thanks!
    • I've successfully installed solaris8 for intel on my pc, just like to install it on those for sparc, mine is cyrix300, you can get some infomation from the faq of www.sun.com
    • As if there is a special version of Solaris that can install in PC.My friend have succeeded install in a pc based on PII 400.
but its hardware support is really poor, some kinds of network adapter of Intel and 3com are not supported. BTW,you have to find driver of video for Solaries.
      • thanks
