Do you have strong air flow at the floor register where the hot air outlet is?
The add-on coil is for air conditioning in summer; however, the coil is in line with the air passage. If the coil is plugged, it will limit air flow.
Good to know that, the smell is gone, it quite possible that, the fan was over heated for the time, if this is the case, smell may come again, when furnace operating more frequently in the colder day. If it does happen, check the fan motor temperature.
